Curb rash sucks, the 360 camera was on, but I was chatting away with others in the car and scraped the curb. The wheel fared better than the tires, but will probably cost about 100-150 to fix (based on estimates). As for the tires, goodbye 1000 bucks. I wouldn’t feel bad, but the OE Contis only got 12k miles on them. With awd, gotta replace all of them . Got Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires since I didn’t want summer only tires. I’ll get the wheel fixed later.

Curb rash is the reason I park a mile away from the curb :P

One option is to buy a shaved tire. Shaving will make the new tire match the diameter of the others. If the dealership doesn’t offer this option, Tire Rack will. http://tires.tirerack.com/tires/Shaving

That wheel looks fine, as long as it’s still intact and not leaking or bent. So you’re good there.
But wow that tire got chipped bad! How was it still holding air with a big chunk like that taken out of it?

On a lot of tires you can take a big chunk out in that area and they won’t lose pressure. I had it happen with a Cooper Zeon RS3

Those are some expensive tires

Those cameras are just terrible with curbs. I feel your pain. My SL had 3 previous owners and the wheels need refinishing....$600 for all of them, but its a decent chunk of change...
As for the tire, do you plan to get another set of those, or different tires when theyre worn?

You wanted some new Michelins anyways.

See you need a tank like my 300D, I drove over a curb to get out of waiting forever behind some idiots.

I changed out the Contis for pilot sports a/s 3. Sized 245/40-18. Not bad for a wagon. I always consider mileage warranties as a challenge :-)

Well, I wanted pilot super sports, but need some nominal all season capabilities for the harsh Seattle winters

Did you measure the tread depth? I don’t remember what the tread depth difference has to be to require a new set of tires but you should check it out

I understand it that you feel you need to replace four tires at $1000 when three of them only have 12k of wear? What do you expect would happen if you bought one new tire? I see you mention AWD as the reason. Does AWD lack a differential? How does it deal with going around a corner if it can’t handle wheels moving at slightly different speeds? I’m the only one asking so maybe there’s some common knowedge that I am lacking, but I can’t follow the reasoning. Seems suspect.

Even with awd the tires don’t wear the same. I didn’t rotate the tires on my wife’s cx9 for way too long and the backs had around 1/8" more than the fronts. I agree, I think I’d only get one tire. 2 at most if absolutely needed, but I don’t think replacing 4 is required.

Hey, why not get one new tire, and then have it shaved down to the same tread depth as the other three?

Didn't want to bother with it.
